The Causal Interpretation of Two-Stage Least Squares with Multiple Instrumental Variables

چکیده

Empirical researchers often combine multiple instrumental variables (IVs) for a single treatment using two-stage least squares (2SLS). When effects are heterogeneous, common justification including IVs is that the 2SLS estimand can be given causal interpretation as positively weighted average of local (LATEs). This requires well-known monotonicity condition. However, we show with more than one instrument, this condition only satisfied if choice behavior effectively homogeneous. Based on finding, consider use under weaker, partial We characterize empirically verifiable sufficient and necessary conditions to LATEs monotonicity. apply these results an empirical analysis returns college instruments. standard at odds data. Credible Two-Stage Least Squares Inference With Possibly-Flawed Instruments

Two-stage least squares (2SLS) is commonly used to obtain consistent structural parameter inferences and asymptotically-valid inference results where one or more explanatory variables is – due to endogeneity, measurement error, etc.– correlated with the model error term. But the validity of 2SLS rests on an assumption that each of the instruments used is itself is unflawed – i.e., uncorrelated ...

Easy R scripts for Two-Stage Least Squares, Instruments, Inferential Statistics and Latent Variables

The two-stage least-squares inferential statistics (2SLS-IS) scripts in R provided here help to discriminate the quality of results in regression models, improving on prototypes by Dow (2007) and Eff and Dow (2009) that implemented a new two-stage least squares (2SLS) standard for regression models with missing data imputation and controls for autocorrelation. Major 2SLS-IS modeling improvement...

The individualistic fallacy, ecological studies and instrumental variables: a causal interpretation

The validity of ecological studies in epidemiology for inferring causal relationships has been widely challenged as observed associations could be biased by the Ecological Fallacy. We reconsider the important design components of ecological studies, and discuss the conditions that may lead to spurious associations. Ecological associations are useful and valid when the ecological exposures can b...

Inference Regarding Multiple Structural Changes in Linear Models Estimated via Two Stage Least Squares

In this paper, we extend Bai and Perron’s (1998, Econometrica, p.47-78) framework for multiple break testing to linear models estimated via Two Stage Least Squares (2SLS). Within our framework, the break points are estimated simultaneously with the regression parameters via minimization of the residual sum of squares on the second step of the 2SLS estimation. We establish the consistency of the...

A least-squares interpretation of the single-stage maximization criterion for multichannel blind deconvolution

In order to attain multichannel blind deconvolution of linear time-invariant nonminimum-phase dynamic systems, Inouye and Habe proposed in 1995 a single-stage maximization criterion. The criterion function is the sum of squared forthorder cumulants of the equalizer outputs, and the coefficients of the equalizer are determined at once. On the other hand, one of possible approaches for multichann...
